A Simple Guide to Hiring a Professional Wedding Officiant

Reading glasses on the computer…officiants are always writing.

“We’ve never done this before…”  Of course, you haven’t! No one expects you to know all about officiant services.  An experienced, professional officiant will be able to guide you through the ceremony and make it the easiest part of your wedding day. They will also know how to submit your marriage license to the proper agency, ensuring that it is correct and legal. I’ve created a simple guide to help you interview an Officiant for your wedding.

What is most important to you?

Lead with the most important thing to you and your partner. Do you want your Officiant to be of a certain faith? Are you LGBTQIA and need an Officiant that respects you and your pronouns? Has the Officiant performed a tradition or ritual that is important to you? Make this the first thing you ask.

Religious, Non-Religious, Spiritual?

This will be the main theme of the ceremony, so consider the feeling, mood and tone of the ceremony you desire. Don’t be afraid of asking the Officiant if they can offer want what you want.

Poetry, Scripture, Performance?

Will your talented family or friends perform during the ceremony? Do you want a special reading? Special music? Interpretive dance? Will the Officiant be able to incorporate this into your ceremony?

Your Vows

Will you write your own vows or do you need some assistance? Some couples are uncomfortable speaking in public and don’t want to recite their vows. Can the Officiant accommodate you?

Special Ceremony or Ritual?

Many couples want to include a special ceremony or ritual such as the Sand Ceremony, the Unity Candle, the Wine Box, Tree Planting, etc, etc.  Do you want to create a ritual that is fun, creative, and uniquely yours? Ask if the Officiant is able to include this in your ceremony.

Other Considerations

Does the Officiant’s fee include attendance to rehearsal, travel and all communications or will there be additional charges? Is the Officiant able to provide the custom experience you desire? Do you feel comfortable with the Officiant? Don’t be afraid to ask for referrals, reviews or videos so you can get a flavor of the experience they offer.
